Breheny secure contract to lay the foundations for Alconbury Campus' next phase

Local civil engineering company J Breheny Contractors Ltd have successfully secured the latest contract for work at Alconbury Weald.

They will start work to extend the first phase of the Enterprise Zone area – for 70 acres around the new Incubator building, enabling over 800,000 sq ft of commercial space to come forward.

The company which was founded in 1963 has offices across the region, and will manage the contract from its Huntingdon office.

Breheny’s Managing Director, Trevor Stiff, stated:

This project will open an exciting new chapter for the Enterprise Campus: enabling us to start construction on the buildings we are currently designing, and open up the next 70 acres of commercial space and landscaping for phase 1.”

The work is part of the Building Foundations for Growth project, which saw partners secure £5m of government funding to match additional investment from Urban&Civic. The work will bring forward the delivery of 70 acres of infrastructure and landscaped platforms, ready for new buildings to start.

The work Breheny will be undertaking will include:

• Following on from the demolition work currently underway to create safe, reusable stockpiles of crush for re-use elsewhere on the site.
• remove redundant services below the ground, such as old fuel pipes, below ground tanks
• carry out any works to remediate the ground or deal with contaminated materials
• groundworks to the areas where hardstanding or buildings have been removed to put in place sub soil and topsoil
• Coordination and installation of new street lighting, telecom, hydrant and water services below the Boulevard Spur and Estate Road in order to provide the node points for further distribution.
• Oversee the provision of electricity and gas installation as part of these Works.
• Complete all surface and foul water drainage including connections to the existing infrastructure, temporary works and the formation of attenuation ponds
• Construct the new Boulevard Spur and Estate Road – including highways, cycleways and footpath works including street lighting, landscaping, planting, white lining and signage

As part of the contract under Alconbury’s National Skills Academy for Construction framework, Breheny will undertake a number of work placements, projects with local schools as well as working with the Alconbury Weald jobs brokerage to recruit local people to a number of contracts they are working on at the moment.
