Medical devices provider Ambu takes space at Alconbury Weald

Ambu Ltd, the manufacturer of single-patient-use, disposable medical devices, has taken one floor (7,745 sq ft) of office space at Alconbury Weald, the new mixed-use destination strategically located between Cambridge, Peterborough, Bedford and Northampton.

Ambu will move from its current premises at Burrel Road, St Ives, to its larger space at Alconbury Weald later this year. Its 88-strong and growing team will occupy the top floor of Incubator 2 at Alconbury Weald.

Joe Dawson, Senior Development Manager at Urban&Civic, the master developer of Alconbury Weald, said:

“With a workforce of over 1 million people living within 60 minutes’ drive, and skills levels 20% above the national average, this is an ideal location to base a company and we’re excited to welcome Ambu to the growing business community at Alconbury.

“Following the coronavirus pandemic, we’re seeing lots of interest from companies looking for the rare combination of high-quality buildings, excellent on-site amenities and a green outlook. With a gym, café, shops, schools and nursery, as well as an inspiring setting, we’re confident Ambu’s staff will enjoy an exceptional working lifestyle here.”

Keith McCallum, Managing Director of Ambu, said:

“Demand for single-patient-use, disposable medical devices is increasing, particularly given the need to control the spread of covid-19. As well as organic business growth, we are looking to further expand our single-use endoscopy portfolio and launch into the urology and gastroenterology markets. Incubator 2 has a lovely spacious feel, and as a sustainable building surrounded by an attractive green environment, will provide the perfect base for our growing team as we deliver our ambitious plans.”

In total, Alconbury Weald is now home to around 60 diverse businesses. Cambridgeshire County Council is also creating a new, sustainable £18.3 million, 38,750 sq ft civic hub that will be the nominated work base for up to 700 staff at Alconbury Weald, with completion expected in spring 2021.

In addition to business space, Alconbury Weald is already home to a new school, a café, convenience store, gym, new parks and sports pitches. So far, just over 350 of the planned 5,000 homes have been completed, and future plans include a town centre, secondary school, health centre, and a 150-acre country park, alongside additional space for office headquarters, creative studios and manufacturing hubs.

Alconbury Weald lies at the meeting point of the A14 and A1, on Busway Route B, and just a short ride from Huntingdon rail station. With a shuttle bus to and from the station launching next year and plans for both the Cambridge Autonomous Metro link and its own rail station, Alconbury Weald will become one of the best-connected places for business in the county.

Agents for commercial opportunities at Alconbury Weald are Eddisons and Savills.
