Local donations to Prestley Wood Academy help support pupil development
- 21.03.2025

Grafham Water Centre and the local community at Alconbury Weald are supporting the development’s special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school, Prestley Wood Academy, by donating bikes, books and Lego to help support the pupils’ learning and development.
Grafham Water Centre recently welcomed students and staff from Prestley Wood Academy and Cambridgeshire County Council’s smart journeys’ team to make a generous donation of 10 bicycles to support the ‘Bikes and Books for Prestley Wood Academy’ campaign.
The bikes will be repaired by a qualified mechanic working alongside the pupils to support their ‘Life Skills’ curriculum. They will then be used and enjoyed by pupils at the school for many years to come, teaching the pupils bicycle maintenance and using them for cycle confidence lessons.
The local community has also been contributing to the initiative by donating bikes, books to help stock the school’s new library and Lego, used as part of the Lego Therapy accredited speech and language intervention to develop social interaction skills.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Alconbury Weald community and the Grafham Water Centre. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated and for the welcome we’ve received from local residents and the business community since we opened in September last year.”

smart journeys, Alconbury Weald’s Travel Plan Coordinator, works in collaboration with master developer Urban&Civic to support the community with initiatives and incentives to encourage active and sustainable travel around the development and wider area, reducing congestion and improving air quality.
“We are extremely thankful to the team at Grafham Water Centre and the local community for their kind donations. The bike donations in particular are a fantastic boost to support our goals to encouraging our local young people to form healthy and sustainable travel habits from an early age.”
smart journeys’ bike, book and Lego donation campaign runs until the end of March; bikes of any sizes can be taken directly to the school and books can be left in the reception of New Shire Hall.
