Community creates unique mosaic celebrating Alconbury Weald
Hundreds of individual photographs have been brought together to create a striking community mosaic celebrating the people, places and moments that make Alconbury Weald such a special place to live.
Created live during this summer’s Food Festival by mosaic artist Allan Levy, the artwork combines hundreds of images submitted by residents and festival visitors to reveal the development’s iconic Grade II listed Watch Office.
Using photographs of Alconbury Weald submitted in advance and uploaded by visitors throughout the Food Festival, the artwork evolved in real time as more images were added. The finished piece also features paintings created by pupils at Prestley Wood Academy, who were invited to contribute to this unique community collaboration.
"Community mosaics are always about people and the stories they share, and this project has been a wonderful example of that. Every photograph submitted captures a moment, a memory or a connection to Alconbury Weald. Individually they're personal snapshots, but together they've become something much bigger – a piece of art that reflects the character of this growing community. It was fantastic to see visitors watching the image emerge throughout the festival and becoming part of its creation.”
Viewed up close, the mosaic reveals hundreds of individual photographs, each representing a personal contribution. Step back and they combine to form a powerful image of one of Alconbury Weald's most recognisable landmarks.
“One of the things that makes Alconbury Weald so special is the strength of its community, and this mosaic captures that perfectly. The Food Festival brought people together to celebrate great food, support local businesses and spend time together, and this artwork is a lasting reminder of those connections. We hope residents enjoy taking a closer look and spotting the many individual photographs that together provide a snapshot of Alconbury Weald as it is today."
The completed mosaic - a visual celebration of the people, food, atmosphere and moments that define Alconbury Weald - will be available to view at The Club in August during normal office hours. It will also be on display on Saturday, 12 September during the Heritage Open Day event, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to explore the hundreds of individual images that make up the artwork.
