Prestley Wood Academy, Alconbury Weald’s Special School, celebrated Autism Awareness Week (31 March-6 April 2025) in a sensory explosion of colours in the run up to the Easter holidays.

The school enjoyed a week of educational, informative and fun activities that culminated in a spectacular event linked to the national theme of 'colours'. Learners and staff alike navigated an obstacle course whilst being showered with colourful, non-toxic powders. The result was a joyful experience of sensory colour and fun, with a paint covered t-shirt to keep as a souvenir!

“We’ve had a fantastic week and it’s been lovely for our children to have an opportunity to celebrate diversity as part of Autism Awareness Week and have fun as a school community before half term.

“The children have been so engaged in the colour run and everyone joined in.  The event pushed them out of their comfort zone and helped build confidence. It’s great to see them having fun, getting messy and just jumping in and taking calculated risks. It’s been a truly wonderful end to the Spring term!”

Autism Awareness Week is an annual event that celebrates the uniqueness of individuals with autism, promotes inclusive activities and helps people better understand the challenges and strengths of those on the autism spectrum.

Speaking at the colour run, Natalie Leigh Brown, Community Development Lead for Alconbury Weald, said: “At Urban&Civic we are more than a master developer, we want to be involved with our communities, and I’m honoured to be a governor of Prestley Wood Academy. What a fabulous job to be able to do! The school is such a wholesome, lovely and loving place – and you can really feel it on a day like today.  The children are having so much fun, and the laughter is infectious.”
