Alconbury Weald embraces Summer Reading Challenge
Children across Alconbury Weald are being encouraged to discover the joy of reading this summer as the community library takes part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge again this year.
Open to children aged four to 11, the nationwide initiative inspires young readers to enjoy books throughout the school holidays. This year's theme, "Read to the Beat", celebrates music, creativity and self-expression, with stories featuring characters who overcome challenges and follow their dreams through the power of music.
From Wednesday 29 July, volunteers at Alconbury Weald Community Library will be available from 10am to midday every Wednesday throughout the summer holidays to listen to children read, chat about their latest literary adventures and award a sticker for every book completed.
Pupils at Ermine Street Church Academy were introduced to this year's theme and invited to sign up for the challenge at a special assembly on 14 July attended by the Cambridgeshire Libraries team.
A range of fun events are being held at Alconbury Weald alongside the weekly Wednesday reading sessions in The Club. This includes:
- 5 August: a fun filled ‘Read to the Beat’ themed craft session.
- 19 August: an interactive drawing Workshop with Matty Long, author and illustrator of the Super Happy Magic Forest series. 5 years +
- Wednesday 26 August: Koalas in Capes! with author Terrie Chilvers - a lively, interactive event featuring superheroes, villains and plenty of koala-themed fun. 5 Years +

In addition, the Storybook Village will be in The Club at Alconbury Weald from 10am to midday on 12 August. At this drop-in event, children up to 11 years old will be able to choose up to three books to take home and keep, free of charge. No booking is required. Visitors can also find out how to donate gently used books.

Children can sign up for this year's Summer Reading Challenge at Alconbury Weald Community Library from 10am to midday on Wednesday 29 July, or at any local library from Saturday 4 July.
