Breheny Civil Engineering, the contractor delivering the latest major infrastructure at Alconbury Weald – the southern link road - has donated £5,000 to support local community projects and assisted The Alconbury Brook Flood Group with the installation of its rainwater gardens.
Alconbury Weald Community Association, a non-profit organisation run by residents to support the thriving community as it grows, is splitting its £3,000 donation between two community projects. £1,000 will go into the Hardship Fund, which enables residents referred by the school, doctor or social worker to access extra financial support that they need but would not be able to get elsewhere. The other £2,000 will go towards supporting one of its community events, which include VE Day celebrations, a Food Festival, Family Fun Day and Christmas Market this year.
Fusion, a local charity that runs activities in school holidays and after school clubs, has been given £2,000 to support its popular Youth Club at Alconbury Weald. It meets in The Pavilion on the second Friday of each month and has sessions for young people aged eight to 11 followed by 11 to 16 years old. The Youth Club is run by a member of staff from Fusion and is supported by volunteers.
Angela Linton from Fusion said: “Alconbury Weald Youth Club is really popular. We have lots of social interaction and it's great to see the older group leading their own games and activities. We have around 45 young people regularly attending and the donation from Breheny will help towards the running costs, new craft supplies and equipment like swing ball sets that can be used outside once the evenings get lighter."
“Fundraising is key to our ongoing success, and we’d really like to raise enough money to be able to hold the Youth Club twice a month to give the young people at Alconbury Weald more opportunities to meet up and enjoy activities together in a safe space.”
Breheny is also providing practical support to assist The Alconbury Brook Flood Group with the installation of its new rainwater gardens at the bottom of Vinegar Hill, which will help divert surface run-off water away from the road and into new drainage systems.
Joe Victory, Regional Commercial Director for Breheny, said: “As a company that is rooted in the local community, and has carried out many infrastructure projects on the Alconbury Weald development over the last 15 years, we believe in giving back to the community, local people and organisations that make a real difference.
“We’re delighted to be able to donate funds to support the fantastic work being done by the Community Association and Fusion’s Youth Club at Alconbury Weald, and it’s also great to be able to utilise the team’s skills and equipment to provide practical support to The Alconbury Brook Flood Group.”
Natalie Leigh-Brown, Community Development Lead for Urban&Civic, said: “We work with all our contractors and housebuilders to ensure all the investments made to bring Alconbury Weald forward also support local projects and good causes. We’re so pleased Breheny have made this generous offer to support the hard work of the Community Association and Fusion, as well as provide practical support to The Alconbury Brook Flood Group. This support will make a real difference, and we look forward to seeing the positive impacts from their kind support.”
