Activity Day motivates new community to get active

Alconbury Weald will be hosting its next Community Activity Day on Saturday 25 June, providing new residents and local communities with a chance to try some new ways to keep fit and ensure an active lifestyle.

The action-packed programme of free activities will take place in the development’s community centre – The Pavilion – and include yoga, strength and balance, tai chi and a Bollywood dance workout as well as baby/toddler yoga and massage.  There will also be a football session for youngsters (5-6 years old) hosted by Tolga and Hunts FA. This will introduce budding athletes to some basic football skills before they put them into practice in a fun game on Watch Office Green.

The day provides people a chance to try their hand at new things, find out about local classes and groups they can join, and meet like-minded people. It also provides Alconbury Weald’s community team with great feedback on the kind of activities people want to see in the new facilities and amenities coming forward.

Rebecca Britton, from Alconbury Weald master developer Urban&Civic, said: “We know when people move their whole routine can change. There is a risk they get out of the habit of doing some of the activities they used to do, but there is also a great opportunity to take up new sports and activities. Going to classes or getting involved in sport is also a great way to meet new people, and to bring new and existing communities together. The Activity Day provides an opportunity for people to try a few different things for free, and learn about some of the activities, groups and classes on their doorstep.”

Alconbury Weald has been designed to support active living and is cited as a best practice case study by Sport England for Active Design. With a gym, cricket pitch, table tennis, multi-use games area and fitness studio, as well as an extensive green network of footpaths and cycleways, the principles aim to provide residents with as many opportunities as possible to enjoy an active lifestyle. The development has also been part of an Active New Communities pilot, working with Living Sport, to support new residents to take up new ways of keeping active.

Natalie Leigh-Brown, Community Lead for Alconbury Weald, said: “Our Community Activity Days are always really popular, providing a great opportunity for people to try out some of the regular activities available in the Pavilion, as well as a chance for us to trial some new ones.  But its not just for Alconbury Weald residents: we want to ensure all our neighbours and the communities around us can join in and help us all put health and wellbeing at the heart of what we do.”

Although the activities for the Community Activity Day on 25 June are free, they need to be booked in advance on EventBrite: https://bit.ly/AW_Activity_Day
