Redrow give children an insight into construction industry

Children from a Cambridgeshire primary school were treated to an insight into the construction industry when Redrow paid them a visit to talk about the new homes it is building at Alconbury Weald.
Ermine Street Church Academy sits at the entrance to the new community being created at Alconbury Weald and, with various phases of development ongoing safely behind hoardings, Redrow site manager George Robertson took time out from overseeing construction to visit the school and give children an insight into the work taking place, the measures construction workers take to stay safe and the importance of staying away from building sites.
George said:
“Alconbury Weald is a landmark project with lots of building work taking place across the entire scheme, not just our new homes. Children are naturally curious about their changing local environment but it’s important that they play safe and stay away from areas where construction is taking place.
“At Alconbury Weald all of the building work is taking place behind secure hoardings but this isn’t necessarily the case in other places. So we reminded the pupils that scaffolding isn’t like a climbing frame in a play area and there are lots of other potential hazards that make building sites dangerous places, particularly for children.”
During the visit George explained how people working on construction sites wear things like hard hats, boots and high-vis vests as a safety precaution. He also delivered high-vis vests which the children will wear on educational visits.
Head teacher Adrian Shepherd said:
“We would like to thank Redrow for taking the time to visit us, it’s extremely valuable for a school to have links with local companies. The emphasis Redrow place on the children’s safety was very pleasing to hear. We are also very grateful for their gift of high-vis vests which will be extremely useful.”
Rebecca Britton – from owner and developer Urban&Civic, who is also a governor at the School – said:
“We encourage all our contractors and partners working on the site to get involved with the school to talk about what they do and how they work. Not only are there important safety and other lessons to help equip children as they learn and grow, but we also want young people here to grow up thinking about the way things are designed, planted, built and developed around them, to inspire them as they think about future careers.
