Records smashed at Huntingdon 10k Run
- 20.06.2013
Course records tumbled at the fourth Huntingdon 10k Charity Run and 3k Fun Run on Father’s Day, June 16.
The event – which was held at Alconbury Weald – using the former airfield’s runway and Grange Farm – saw the fastest finishing times for 2012 smashed in both races on a day of record entries, big crowds and fine weather.
Aaron Scott, from Stamford, was the fastest man in the Cook Italian 10k Race, beating Michael Salt’s finish time of 34 minutes 13 seconds in 2012 by 57 seconds. He crossed the finish line in 33 minutes 16 seconds, despite a bout of ill health in the week leading up to the race. Felicity Milton, from Rutland, finished in 38:24, an impressive four minutes 16 seconds faster than last year’s fastest woman Caroline Pritchard, who finished in 42.40.
The 3k Fun Run records also fell when Diana Chalmers, aged 15, from St Ivo School crossed the line in 10 minutes 42 seconds. Last year’s fastest Fun Run time was 11:10 by Matthew Sellick.A total of 670 people crossed the 10k Race finish line, over 100 more than in 2012 while the 3k Fun Run was completed by 206 people, over 50 more than last year.
Other 10k finishers included Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly, who completed the 10k course in 57 minutes 14 seconds. Former local MP and Prime Minister Sir John Major was also among the crowds enjoying the day.
Race Director Bob Hulstrom said: “More people than ever enjoyed this year’s event at Alconbury Weald. There was a fantastic atmosphere and the Spectator Village added plenty of extra interest for runners, their families and those who came to cheers on the competitors. All the profits from this year’s event will benefit local charities who work to improve the lives of people in Cambridgeshire. It’s too early to say how much we will be able to share with our chosen causes but it is certain to run to thousands of pounds.”
The charities are: Child Victims of Crime, Riding for the Disabled, Alconbury Thursday Club, St Ives Day Care Centre, Huntingdon, Peterborough and Cambridge MS Therapy Centre and Cambridgeshire Mencap.
Huntingdon Mayor Councillor Bill Hensley started the 3k Fun Run. Cllr Hensley said: “My theme during my year in office is local, local, local. This is a wonderful local event and a fantastic opportunity to raise money for local causes. I am delighted to support it.”
Bob added: “The support we have had from sponsors has helped to make this year’s event our most successful yet. We are very grateful to Cook Italian, Personal Fit and Urban and Civic in particular for their backing but there are many others who have contributed time, service and cash. The many marshalls who donate their time to make the races safe and who always work hard to cheers on our runners also deserve a special mention. Many of our volunteers have been helping since 2010. Their support is always appreciated.”
Rebecca Britton, from Urban&Civic added:“It’s been great to see so many people up on Alconbury Weald enjoying the space, and raising money for some great causes. We look forward to continuing to support the 10k run, and in time transforming the area of the race into green public space which can be enjoyed all year round.”
