New Redrow Library books in at Ermine Street Church Academy

THE opening of the ‘Redrow library’ marks the latest chapter for a Cambridgeshire school.

Ermine Street Church Academy opened near Huntingdon in September 2016.  It sits at the entrance to Alconbury Weald, a landmark scheme which is creating a vibrant new community where people can live, learn, work and grow.

Now with sponsorship from Redrow, one of the partners building new homes at Alconbury Weald, the school has officially opened its library and to thank the homebuilder for its support it’s been named the ‘Redrow library’.

Head teacher Adrian Shepherd said: “Thanks to Redrow’s considerable generosity we were able to purchase just over 160 books for the library. We used the donation to buy non-fiction books as this was the area of the library less well resourced. We asked the children for their input and chose titles that link to topics we’re learning about such as space and World War II. Purchasing them has enabled the children much greater access to topic books as a learning resource, using them for research, which wouldn’t have been possible for more than a few children to do at a time without the new additions.”

Redrow is building 200 homes at Alconbury Weald and donated £1,000 to the Ermine Street Church Academy.

Tonia Tyler, sales director for Redrow Homes (South Midlands), said: “Redrow has a track record of supporting the communities in which it builds and we focus particularly on young people. We were happy to be able to help furnish Ermine Street Church Academy with additional resources to help enrich children’s learning experience. The fact that Alconbury Weald is already home to a primary school, with plans for secondary and special schools too, is a big plus for buyers with children or who are looking to start a family.”

The wider multi-developer scheme at Alconbury Weald is being overseen by Urban&Civic and will eventually provide thousands of homes, jobs and hundreds of acres of green space, plus a host of community facilities.

Rebecca Britton, from Urban&Civic is also a governor at the school. She said:
“We want all the housebuilders, contractors and businesses on site to feel an active part of growing and supporting our new community. Redrow’s generosity is a good example of how such gifts can make a real difference.”
