Monks Wood Seed Collection Event: Sunday 27 October

Families and individuals are invited to an autumn ramble through Monks Wood (near Woodwalton) on Sunday 27 th October, 11am-1pm. As well as savouring the sights and scents of autumn, they'll be the opportunity to collect acorns and other tree seeds.

Amrita Huggins, ranger with Huntingdonshire District Council’s Countryside Services, says "People love collecting tree seeds, and we love growing them! The oak trees and other species that we’ll grow from the collection will become a fantastic habitat for all kinds of invertebrates, as well as birds and mammals.’

The group will meet at the southern entrance of the reserve, (Grid Reference 196795) where there is limited parking in the layby at Saul’s Lane (B1090.) A free lift service will also run from Huntingdon. Please email Victoria Parchment in advance at alconbury@urbanandcivic.com, or phone 01480 413141 to book seats.

The seeds will be grown on at Alconbury Weald Community Tree Nursery, to provide local provenance trees for future woodland and green spaces on the former airfield. Some of the seeds will be grown on at Huntingdonshire Community Nursery, to supply free trees for public and community spaces across the district.

Darren Tysoe, Executive Councillor for the Environment, explained “This is a wonderful example of partnership working between the District Council and Urban&Civic, and a great opportunity to involve and engage local people both with trees, with our ranger team, and with the development at Alconbury Weald.”

Rebecca Britton from Alconbury Weald owners and developers Urban&Civic explained

“We’ve got over half a million trees to plant on Alconbury Weald and we want the onsite tree nursery to be at the heart of involving people in growing, learning about and planting trees: it is such a strong and tangible way of connecting people to the environment around them, and also great family fun!”

The wood can often be muddy so please wear sturdy footwear and warm and waterproof clothing as appropriate.
