Guided Walk and Seed Collecting Event at Monks Wood: Saturday October 12

On Saturday 12th October, people are being invited to join a Guided Walk and Seed Collecting event organised by Alconbury Weald Tree ranger, Amrita Huggins.

The morning event will give people the chance to discover the fascinating ecology and history of this ancient woodland. During the walk volunteers will learn about the seeds of each species and gather seeds which will be grown on at the new Alconbury Weald tree nursery. These seeds will  help provide local provenance trees for future woodland and green spaces on the former airfield. Some of the seeds will also be grown on at Huntingdonshire Community Nursery, to supply free trees for public and community spaces across the district.

Amrita Huggins said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to discover the secrets of the wood, in all its autumn beauty. It’s also a great way to help increase the biodiversity and natural beauty of our area, by collecting seeds which will be grown on to provide important new woodland habitats for the district’.

The event will take place at Monks Wood, near Woodwalton. Meet at the southern entrance of the reserve, Grid Reference 196795. There is limited parking on the layby at Saul’s Lane (B1090); please share lifts where possible.

The wood can often be muddy so please wear sturdy footwear and warm and waterproof clothing as appropriate. The walk will last approximately 2 hours. This is a free event. This is a joint event between Alconbury Weald, Huntingdonshire District Council and Natural England.  A family seed collecting day will also be held on Sunday October 27 with a minibus available from Huntingdon to Monks Wood.
