Explore Alconbury Weald's hidden past on National Heritage Open Days

The Avionics Building at Alconbury Weald is at the heart of the former airfield's cold war history and as part of the National Heritage Festival in September the doors of this fascinating building are being opened up to the public.

The building, often referred to as "Magic Mountain" was designed to withstand a direct nucleur attack and built to process the photography from reconnaisance missions in the late 1980's.  Completed in 1988 and redundant in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is the site that symbolises the Cold War period.

Theatre company New International Encounter (NIE) and site owners and developers Urban&Civic will be hosting special guided tours of the underground bunker on Saturday 10th September as part of a wider project which explores the heritage of the building and has just received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to continue the project.
