Community Library launches at Alconbury Weald
- 02.10.2021
Saturday, 2 October saw the launch of a new community library at Alconbury Weald.
The launch was originally planned for April last year but was delayed due to the pandemic. When local library facilities were closed throughout lockdowns, Urban&Civic worked with Cambridgeshire Libraries to offer ‘lucky dip’ library bags which were hand-delivered to the local community to keep them connected to their favourite page-turners and the upcoming library service.
On the day of the library launch, the community were invited to join activities like; baby and toddler rhyme time, a live storytelling experience including rats, skinks, hedgehogs, guinea pigs and a snake, and an introduction to what the library service has to offer digitally.
A permanent library is planned for the future town centre at Alconbury Weald and in the meantime the new library service in The Club, which is run by a group of local volunteers, is proving very popular with the local community. The library has received many book donations to grow the collection which continues to grow, providing a great range of page-turners for the community to browse. The community library facility is open to the public 5 days a week between 9am and 5pm.
Residents at Alconbury Weald have also been taking part in a book club since last year where they meet either on Zoom and in one another's gardens to chat about their recent reads. They also share an active WhatsApp group to share details of their favourite books.
