The Cambridgeshire Library Service is encouraging children (aged 4–11 years old) to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge and discover the joy of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays.

To support this year’s ‘sport and games’ theme, Alconbury Weald is hosting a variety of activities including table tennis, ten pin bowling and mini golf from 10am to midday on Saturday, 15 July in The Club and on Watch Office Green. Hunts FA will also be teaching football skills on its inflatable pitch and Living Sport will have a series of mini sporting challenges.

As well as sports and games, the children will be able to enjoy some quiet time in Alconbury Weald’s community library and Cambridgeshire Library Service’s mobile library to look through the wide selection of books available and choose their first Summer read.

All children taking part will receive a special collector folder when they start the Challenge, and a sticker for each book read. Those collecting all six stickers will receive a certificate and medal; just pop along to the Club between 10am and midday on Wednesdays during the summer holidays – or head over to your local library - so your child can claim their reward and choose their next book.

Jessica Jones from Cambridgeshire Library Services said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to get children excited about books and the team has been delivering assemblies to local schools to encourage them to take up the Challenge. We hope to see lots of them at Alconbury Weald for the launch event and at local libraries throughout the summer holidays.”

Natalie Leigh-Brown, Communities and Partnerships for Alconbury Weald, said: “We’re delighted to be able to host this event for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. There aren’t many libraries that overlook a large green capable of hosting such a diverse range of sporting activities and games. We hope lots of children from the local area come along and join in - and, filled with a sense of team spirit, take up the Challenge and enjoy adventures through the pages of each book they read.”

With local libraries throughout Cambridgeshire, children of all reading levels have access to a variety of books and resources to encourage and inspire a love of reading. With library membership you can also access online resources through the digital apps including Libby, Borrowbox and Ulverscroft and take part in events and resources suited for all ages - from Rhyme time to Storytime as well as other crafts and activities.

If you are unable to attend the launch event at Alconbury Weald, you can still sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library.
